Helpenstell Cemetery is named for Wilhelm Helpenstell, who buried his infant son, Henry, in a field behind his home in 1861 and designated the site as a cemetery. Helpenstell and his sister, Wilhelmina, had left Prussia in fall 1850 and arrived in Nacogdoches County with fellow immigrants Johann and Wilhelm Kolb. The cemetery is at the site of a settlement the German immigrants established approximately halfway between the two communities of Union Springs and Lone Pine. The Helpenstell Cemetery Association incorporated in 1985 to create a perpetual fund for care of the site. Burials include veterans from the Civil War through the Vietnam War.
