As the first radio station in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV), KRGV-TV began in 1916 when M.S. Niles established studios in his Harlingen Music Company. KRGV Radio formally began on Mar. 18, 1927, after gaining the RGV’s first broadcasting license. KRGV moved to its present Weslaco location in 1969. KRGV was the first radio station in the RGV to be affiliated with a major network when it joined NBC broadcasting in 1937, and the station later branched out to television in 1954. The affiliation changed to the ABC television network in 1976. The LBJ Company briefly acquired KRGV-TV, and in 1964 Mobile Videotapes Inc., directed by the Manship family, purchased KRGV-TV and thereafter oversaw the station.
